As the world prepares to commemorate World TB Day on March 24, 2024, the Organization for Public Health Interventions and Development (OPHID) proudly reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the global fight against tuberculosis. Under the galvanizing theme, "Yes! We Can End TB!" we stand united with hope and determination, signaling that the eradication of tuberculosis—a disease that claims over a million lives annually—is within our reach. Through concerted multilateral action, we are poised to turn the tide against TB.

With generous support from the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC), OPHID and its implementing partners champion routine screening of TB among all people living with HIV across 15 districts of Zimbabwe, ensuring quality long-term care for 500,000 PLHIV with HIV Care and Treatment Services. Additionally, OPHID implements the TB-TAP project, which is firmly grounded in the national TB strategy and leverages current PEPFAR and Global Fund investments. The TASQC TB TAP program aims to fortify client-centered TB services through community initiatives and support facility systems that reduce disease transmission and progression.

During the period from March 2023 to February 2024, the program successfully screened 13,047 PLHIV for TB and identified signs of active TB disease, with 2,169 individuals testing positive and promptly initiating TB treatment.

In line with our commitment to prioritizing key populations, OPHID recommends the following actions:

  1. Identifying and treating TB among HIV-positive pregnant women: OPHID urges all HIV-positive pregnant women to undergo TB screening at every clinic visit to receive prompt diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Stepping up efforts for TB screening in children: Children who have been exposed to TB in their immediate family or household should be screened for TB. OPHID urges parents and caregivers diagnosed and treated for TB to ensure their children are screened for TB at the nearest clinic. Children living with HIV should be screened for TB at every routine consultation.
  3. Fighting TB and HIV for a healthy future: OPHID encourages all people living with HIV to undergo TB screening every time they visit the clinic to receive prompt TB diagnosis and treatment if needed.

As we mark World TB Day 2024, OPHID stands in solidarity with the global community, advocating for increased awareness, improved access to care, and comprehensive support for those affected by tuberculosis. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and work towards a world free from the burden of TB. Join us in commemorating World TB Day 2024 and let's reaffirm our collective commitment to ending TB. Together, #WeCanEndTB.
